I can’t remember the original source of the Earth Art idea, and I suspect several people would claim the honour (though NASA is in pole position) but Searthing offers some pretty spectacular examples and the chance to contribute to the site.

A few years ago I was enthusiastic about getting learners to find interesting angles in Google Earth, adding a suitable caption using Big Huge Labs’ Motivator tool. Who can forget the classic “Cabbage of Jub”?

  1. I think it must have been me… ;)

  2. Unfortunately I deleted my old Google Earth blog a couple of years ago so I’m unable to prove you wrong! I still claim to be the first teacher to mention Wordle to the wider world :)

  3. Nice. I nicked the Google Earth art from you. Thanks for reminding me about Wordle, seems ages since I was told to put the school vision statement through it, whilst watching Shift Happens… dramatic pause

  4. Thanks for the press, Noel!
I was intrigued the first time a saw this concept a few years back. USGS “Earth as Art” 1, 2 & 3 probably
is in the running for being some of the first to show Earth in this way. We’ve tried to un-Earth images on Google Earth that don’t scream “Earth!” right when you see them. Thanks for visiting. You are definitely a Searth pioneer. Love the Cabbage!

  5. And come register and post that cabbage! That’s Vintage right there!
