BBC Class Clips Video – in Google Earth

Update: 6/1/09

Unfortunately this is now a legacy post since the BBC has removed the embed option from the Class Clips player. I thought it was too good to be true!

Thought it would be fun to see if the new BBC iPlayer for Class Clips embeds nicely into a Google Earth placemark. And it does. Here’s a BBC video…

And here it is in Google Earth..

Brilliant – the classroom implications of this should be fairly clear! For those unsure of the procedure – just create a placemark and paste the embed code from the video into the description box.

Well – that’s very nice to know !

That’s a lovely demo :-) It immediately put me in mind of Britain from Above [ http://www.bbc.co.uk/britainfromabove/ ] which has shareable/embeddable iPlayer clips, I think?

I can’t seem to embed the BBC clips in a popup using Google Mymaps though? Is mymaps limited in the extent to which you can create video annotated markers?

Tony – I know – I couldn’t get to work either, not for the first time that I’ve been frustrated by editing html in GMaps.

The only problem is that apparently the BBC doesn’t allow me (from the US) to view the video clip because I’m not in the “right area”. I get a message which says: “Not available in your area”.

A great idea for a range of subjects, not just for Geography. I’ll be promoting this idea, using our Moodle VLE as the platform from which the Google Earth/Class Clips combination can be launched, both in the classroom, and by the students from home. All credits to Noel and Juicy/Digital Geography.

Wow, this is a fab tip! I couldn’t get the BBC ones to work either (I’m in Australia) but I tried it with a Youtube. I didn’t know what embedding was before – thanks for sharing. BTW I did see a workaround on the makeuseof blog for watching videos from overseas in other areas.Might work for this one http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/openhulu/

    Noel,
I have had a try at doing this today, but cannot get the embed code to put in the placemark. Where do you get the embed code from for the BBC Class clips?

On the Britain from above website mentioned by Tony, there is an embed code in the share area. On the class clips there are only the email and link buttons.

Thanks for this post though. I have spent a day teaching myself lots of new things on Google Earth.

Matthew – I agree, it seems as though the embed code has disappeared. I’ll investigate further. It was a really useful function.

Thanks Noel. I’m officially giving up trying now!
